A new study just released by the United Nations Development Programme finds that because of the severe long-term impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, an additional 207 million people are likely to fall into extreme poverty by 2030, bringing the total number of people living in extreme poverty to more than 1 billion. However, this depressing scenario is not yet a foregone conclusion. Keeping a close eye on achieving the Sustainable Development Goals will slow the growth of extreme poverty and lift 146 million people out of extreme poverty.
